Introduce yourself…name, job title, & the company you work for.

Scott O'Neill - Dispensing Optician - Bossman at Doctor Oculus

In a nutshell, what do you do?

I create ridiculously well-tailored lenses for great styles of glasses made from sustainable materials. My ethos is that the lenses should be made to adapt to the human, not the other way around and that the frames should turn heads and attract compliments.

How long have you been working in Digbeth?

The store opened one year ago in September. Happy first birthday to me.

What makes your business so special?

Most opticians are either corporate chains or independent in name only, where a larger company owns half of the original independent business but just keeps the name. This means you get a similar corporate and conservative experience in most places. Doctor Oculus is the punk opticians and will always be independent, committed to planet positivity and providing the most well-tailored and distinctive eyewear you can buy.

What do you like most about working in Birmingham’s Creative Quarter?

It's colourful and everybody has a personality.

Where do you normally go for lunch in B9?

Autobrew for Samosas is the only correct answer.

Do you have a recommendation for the best thing to do in Digbeth outside of work?

I don't have a life outside work

What are you currently working on?

Expanding the business to include eye tests and hearing care. I want everybody to be able to experience properly tailored eyewear, so it's my goal to make sure there is no reason anybody in Digbeth would ever need to set foot in a chain optician ever again!
